Cell Phones
Limiting Cell Phone Access
Why
At Quincy High School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and productive learning environment for all our students. As educators, we are increasingly aware of the rising concerns regarding the negative effects of cell phones in our classrooms. Research has shown that excessive cell phone use can lead to distractions, reduced academic performance, and even negative impacts on mental health.
To address these concerns and ensure that our students can focus on their studies, we are beefing up our school-wide efforts to limit cell phone access during class time. Our goal is to create an environment where students can engage fully in their learning experiences without the interruptions and distractions that cell phones can bring. Prior to this year, cell phones were not allowed to be used during class unless an exception was made by that teacher for learning purposes only. This year, we are working to make our rules and expectations more clear and manageable for all students and staff.
How
How we will be limiting cell phone access at QHS:
-
Cell Phone-Free Zones: Classrooms and common areas, e.g. hallways and restrooms, will be designated as cell phone-free zones while classes are in session. Students will be required to keep their phones and wireless headphones stowed in their pockets or bags during class time. Students will be allowed to access their personal devices before and after school, during passing periods, and at lunchtime. Reasonable accommodations for students with specific learning or health needs will be provided.
-
Educational Workshops: We will be reviewing school-wide expectations and consequences with all grade levels during our student handbook review on the first and second days of school. Advisory classes will receive mini lessons designed to educate students on the importance of minimizing cell phone use and the benefits of staying focused during class.
-
Parental Support: We encourage parents to support these efforts by discussing the importance of limited cell phone use with their children and reinforcing these practices at home. Furthermore, if a parent or guardian needs to make immediate contact with their child during class time, we ask that they call the main office. Students who need to reach a family member during class may request access to the student phone in the main office.
We believe that these steps will help our students develop better study habits, improve their academic performance, and foster a more positive and engaging learning environment. Your support and cooperation are crucial in making this initiative a success.
